- "B" Patterns
Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the student can preform the listed maneuvers to the level of skill specified in the Practical Test Standards for Instrument Rating - Airplane
Flight Lesson 2 - Partial Panel
OBJECTIVE:
The student will apply the knowledge gained during the previous ground lesson to flight operations using the magnetic compass as the primary heading indicator.
Content:
- Review as necessary
- Timed Turns
- Compass Turns
- Recovery From Unusual Attitudes
- "A" Patterns Using the Magnetic Compass
- Non-Precision Approach using the Magnetic Compass
Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the student can recover from unusual attitudes and maintain directional control of the aircraft.
Flight Lesson 3 - Radio Navigation
OBJECTIVE:
The student will apply knowledge gained in ground training to basic radio navigation in flight.
Content:
- Review Basic Instrument Flight
- Radio Navigation:
- Position locating
- Tracking
- Intercepts
- Time / Distant to station
Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the student can accurately determine his/her location, intercept radials/bearings, track VOR/NDB radials, and preform time/distance maneuvers using radio aids.
Flight Lesson 4 - Holding Patterns
OBJECTIVE:
The student will become proficient at entering and remaining within holding patterns. He/she will also become proficient at tracking other patterns.
Content:
- Review Intercepts/Tracking
- Holding Patterns
- Other Patterns
Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the student can demonstrate proficiency at entering and remaining within holding patterns. He/she will also demonstrate proficiency at tracking other patterns.
Flight Lesson 5 - VOR Approaches
OBJECTIVE:
The student will apply knowledge obtained during ground briefing during actual flight conditions.
Content:
- Review VOR intercepts and tracking
- VOR Approaches:
- Visual
- By Reference to Instruments
Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the student can perform a VOR approach procedure, with limited instructor intervention, and maintaining altitude within plus or minus 100 feet and last than three-quarter CDI deflection throughout the approach.
Flight Lesson 6 - ILS Approaches
OBJECTIVE:
The student will gain proficiency in performing ILS approach procedures.
Content:
- Review as necessary
- ILS Approaches
Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the student can perform an ILS approach procedure, with limited intervention, and maintain glide slope within one half deflection and last than one-half CDI deflection throughout the approach.
Flight Lesson 7 - NDB Approaches
OBJECTIVE:
The student will gain proficiency in performing NDB approach procedures.
Content:
- Review as necessary
- NDB Approaches
Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the student can perform an NDB approach procedure, with limited instructor intervention, and maintain altitude within plus or minus 100 feet and track within 10 degrees of the desired course.

Flight Lesson 10 - Simulated Practical Test
OBJECTIVE:
To familiarize the student with the format of the practical test flight.
Content:
- Simulated Practical Test Flight
Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the student demonstrates readiness for the practical test by performing all required maneuvers and procedures within the limitations prescribed in the Practical Test Standards.
Flight Lesson 11 - Review IFR Flight Procedures
OBJECTIVE:
This lesson provides an opportunity to review any weak areas or to provide emphasis on areas of learning that may need it.
Content:
- As determined by the Instructor
Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the instructor finds that the student is prepared to take the practical test.
