Ground School Lesson 1 - Aircraft Instruments

OBJECTIVE:
To provide the student with a working knowledge of aircraft instrumentation and utilization applicable to IFR flight.

      • Vertical Speed Indicator

Completion Standards:
The lesson is complete when the student demonstrates through oral questioning that he/she has a working knowledge of the aircraft instrumentation and their proper use.


Ground School Lesson 2 - Magnetic Compass

OBJECTIVE:
The student will the principles of the Magnetic Compass and its errors. He/she will also learn how to compensate for the Magnetic Compass errors.

    Completion Standards:
    The lesson is complete when the student can explain the various errors and how to compensate for them.


    Ground School Lesson 3 - Radio Navigation

    OBJECTIVE:
    The student will learn the principles of radio operation and navigation by reference to radio aids.

    • Navigational Radios:
      • VOR/LOC/ILS
      • ADF
      • DME
      • Marker Beacons
    • Radio Navigation:
      • Position Locating
      • Tracking
      • Intercepts
      • Time/Distance to station

    Completion Standards:
    The lesson is complete when the student can accurately described how to identify his/her location, intercept and track radials/radials using VOR, ADF and other radio navigation aids.


    Ground School Lesson 4 - Holding Patterns

    OBJECTIVE:
    The student will learn how to enter holding patterns and remain within protected airspace. Additionally, he/she will be introduced to tracking flight patterns similar to procedure turns and instrument approach procedures.

    Completion Standards:
    The lesson is complete when the student can correctly described the recommended entries into holding pattern procedures. He/she shall also be familiar with other types of patterns to be flown.


    Ground School Lesson 5 - Approach & ATC Procedures

    OBJECTIVE:
    The student will learn the elements of the instrument approach and associated ATC procedures.

    Content:

    • Instrument Approach Construction:
      • Segments of the Approach
      • Fixes associated with the approach
      • Checklist use and aircraft operation during various segments of the approach
    • ATC Phraseology and Procedures During the Approach
    • Missed Approach Procedures
    • Reading Approach Plates:
      • VOR Approach

    Completion Standards:
    The lesson is complete when the student is familiar with the elements of Instrument Approaches and Associated ATC Procedures.


    Ground School Lesson 6 - Meteorology

    OBJECTIVE:
    The student will become proficient that obtaining, interpreting, and analyzing Aviation Weather Reports.

    • Aviation Weather Reports:
      • Sequence Reports
      • Radar Reports
      • Pireps
      • ATIS
      • PATWAS and other automated reports
      • Personal Observations
    • Aviation Weather Forecasts:
      • Terminal Forecasts
      • Area Forecasts
      • Sigmets & Airmets
      • Winds Aloft
      • Weather Charts

    Completion Standards:
    The lesson is complete when the student can obtain, interpret, and analyze weather reports and forecasts without instructor assistance.


    Ground School Lesson 7 - Federal Aviation Regulations I

    OBJECTIVE:
    The student will learn Federal Aviation Regulations applicable to cross-country flying under Instrument Flight Rules.

    • FAR 91:
      • Equipment Requirements/Checks
      • Filing a Flight Plan
      • Fuel Requirements
      • Alternate Requirements

    Completion Standards:
    The lesson is complete when the student can demonstrate by oral questioning that he/she has a working knowledge of the Federal Aviation Regulation pertaining to Instrument Flight in the National Airspace System.


    Ground School Lesson 8 - Federal Aviation Regulations II

    OBJECTIVE:
    The student will become familiar with Federal Aviation Regulations and Procedures to be used during emergencies and equipped failures during IFR flight.

    Content:

    • Communication Failure
    • Navigation Radio Failure
    • In Flight Emergencies:
      • Fire In Flight
      • Partial & Total Electrical Failure
      • Unforcast Ice
      • Passenger Illness
      • Other

    Completion Standards:
    The lesson is complete when the student can describe how to safely complete a flight despite equipment failures and emergencies that allow continue flight.


    Ground School Lesson 9 - Flight Planing & Aircraft Performance

    OBJECTIVE:
    The student will become proficient at planning an IFR flight using information from weather sources, the aircraft flight manual, the Airmans Information Manual and personal observations.

    • Flight Planing:
      • Route Selection
      • Time En route
      • Fuel Requirements
      • Alternate Selection
      • Aircraft Performance
      • Completion of a Flight Log
      • Filing a Flight Plan

    Completion Standards:
    The lesson is complete when the student can independently and correctly plan an IFR flight without instructor assistance.


    Ground School Lesson 10 - Written Test

    OBJECTIVE:
    To determine applicant readiness for the practical past. The student will complete a written test with a minimum passing store of 80 percent correct answers.

    Completion Standards:
    The lessons is complete when the applicant has satisfactorily completed the written test with a minimum passing score of 80 percent correct answers.


    Ground School Lesson 11 - Review

    OBJECTIVE:
    Review and discuss any weak areas in preparation for the practical test.

    Content:

    • As Determined by the Instructor

    Completion Standards:
    The lesson is complete when the instructor is satisfied that the applicant is prepared for the oral portion of the practical test.


    Ground School Lesson 12 - Review Paperwork

    OBJECTIVE:
    To ensure that all required records and documents are in order for the flight test. Any subjects requiring additional review may also be discussed.
